Medical errors that can cause serious birth injuries

On Behalf of | Apr 18, 2022 | Medical Malpractice |

If you ask expectant parents what they hope for as they prepare for the birth of a child, they will almost always tell you that all they want is a healthy baby. For a small number of families, the actions taken at the hospital during the birth of their child could have serious health implications for the newborn.

Birth injuries can include brain damage and neck injuries, along with many other lasting health concerns. Sometimes, they are the result of what health care providers do or fail to do. Let’s look at two ways that medical professionals can cause birth injuries.

They don’t monitor the baby or intervene quickly

Multiple factors increase the risk of complications during birth, from a baby with a very large head to a mother with underlying health concerns. The nurses and doctors assisting in a birth should always monitor for fetal distress once active labor starts and intervene quickly when necessary, but especially when there is an elevated risk.

They make unnecessary interventions or the wrong ones

Some doctors are so overzealous about taking care of their patients that they can cause harm. A doctor who intervenes in the birth process will potentially need to continue treating the woman during labor. If a doctor interferes in an otherwise healthy birth or chooses the wrong treatment, like a medication they use off-label, the results could be tragic and completely preventable.

If the health care professionals attending to you or a loved one made mistakes, your family may be able to seek justice and compensation. Connecting a recent birth injury with the medical care you received could give you grounds for a medical malpractice claim.
